Gravity, yes, that ceramic candle works with the pressure produced from gravity. The taller the water column, the higher the pressure, the greater the flow rate.

........ or one can purchase and assemble the components oneself. I used one of these for years with a scepter water jerry can with the candle on the bottom and the GAC filter hung on the outside. Just fill the jerry can, and in a couple of hours one has five gallons of filtered water in another can positioned lower down.
