For me, I can think of two times I failed; once when I was a young man I drove in a winter storm. When I lost control of the vehicle, I put myself in a survival situation. What I learned in the importance of risk mitigation.
Example #2: A few years later I went into the Grand Canyon. It took much longer to get the the trailhead from the Village, hours actually. In that time, I drank water intended for the hike, which itself was an epic adventure. The water I drank in the car intended for the hike put me in a world of hurt.
That night I thought it might be my last night on Earth - if I did not get to a water supply the next day. What I learned was to NEVER compromise water supply, especially in a dessert environment. In both cases, my failure was to take unnecessary risk.
To be clear, my failure was to take on risk with NO survival benefit! What survival mistakes have you made and what did you learn from it?
