Looking for a story: Sheepdog

Story of a guy who grows up in a town and quietly is the sheepdog protecting the kids in school, and, later, the folks in the town and countryside. Some know there is a person who is protecting them, but not who. Sorry, can't find it anywhere. Thanks in advance!
