I bought them for a few reasons: camp/hiking food, emergency food, lunch, and those occasions that my wife isn't home to cook dinner....but also maybe because I like trying out new toys.
I was in the military 25 years ago, which sounds so long ago that you'd think I'd only have had sea-rat's and canned beans, but during Desert Storm we had "real" mre's that I didn’t hate as much as others.
I have also had plenty of Mountain House and another brand, but the MRE pouches are complete meals, not just an entree.
I got a box of 12, which came with 4 or 5 different meals.
Today's unboxing is the Chicken Pesto Pasta.
To drink, “Tang”, or the generic version there of. Tastes just like tang.
Crackers and jelly, tasted just like stale saltines and apple jelly, but very crumbly. I’d suggest not eating them in your sleeping bag.
The side dish of roasted salted corn, which I wasn’t sure how to prepare and ended up just eating them straight from the bag, were really good. Crunchy, salty with a little spice to them. Didn’t eat them all, but definitely saved them for later.
The chemical heater might keep you warm on cold winter nights while you’re outside, soaking wet in a freezing hail storm, but in no way did it heat the entree up in any way noticeable. If you go for these, plan on boiling your own water or just eating them cold. Remember, these aren’t freeze dried meals, they are fully cooked and ready to eat out of the bag.
The Chicken Pesto Pasta was “OK”. I’m not a very picky eater, and I did eat the entire bag after I heated it up in the microwave, but it wasn’t overly flavorful or delicious. It very much reminded me of Progresso soup in flavor, which means it is probably heavy on salt.
Plenty of chicken and pasta, with the typical pesto-green coloring. The pasta may have been a bit soggy, but again, I did eat the whole bag and I’m at my house with plenty of other options so it must be on the “good” side of my scale.
The chocolate chip cookie was the only real disappointment...bland and flavorless and only had 2 bites before it hit the trash.
I do have a particular stomach, so I will report any issues that may arise from eating this meal later on, and I’ll update as I make my way through the other 4 or 5 meals.
