What to prepare for?

It's always wise to prepare for the more common local disasters. But it's also important to prepare for the unforeseeable. I'm a classic example of that. I live in a dry desert climate with good drainage and there had never been a flood here before. Yet about a decade back we were washed off the map. I'm talking mudslides over rooftops, holes opening up and swallowing roads and businesses, rescues and shelters, entire neighborhoods being being condemned afterwards, etc. Totally not predictable.

I couldn't get to the roads to get out of town and the roads were underwater anyway. But with my preps in place, I was able to make it to high ground in the desert and wait it out. So me and the doggies had a little impromptu camping trip in the rain for a few days, and wasn't lacking a thing. We had shelter, food, water, proper clothing, ability to cook and stay warm, etc. Was even able to get a cell phone signal to check on family in town.
