Colt and BCM AR advice

The Colt uses a carbine gas length that is a copy of the militarys version, developed for reliability in a 14.5" barrel. For a 16" barrel, the newer midlength gas system is superior. The Colt uses a government profile, which was developed based on flawed feedback on a full-auto rifle, and for the capability to accept a grenade launcher. Civilian semi-autos dont require these. These are just several of the concessions on the Colt so it looks like the military's M4, because thats what they are selling: you can own one Just Like Army's.

If you dont want an M4gery, theres no reason to accept last generation tech. Consider something with midlength gas, a thinner barrel length, other upgrades in furniture, twist, gas system, coatings, trigger, etc.

Generally, barrel choice is a continuum of low weight -> high weight that corresponds to how many rounds until accuracy changes. Pencil-> Lightweight-> Medium-> Heavy-> Semi-Bull-> Bull, with Bull being the heaviest and taking the longest to heat up to where group size opens. PERSONALLY I like Lightweight, which stays tight for me for about 2 mags worth, then opens a 1/4MOA. But, I can carry it forever.

The issue with Government profile is, the weight is all exactly where you dont want it, at the end. So, an SPR profile of exactly the same weight may feel quicker and handier, just because the weight will be more centered. Its also better allocated to not be as effected by heat.

As far as general quality, Colt and BCM are about the same, excellent materials and very good manufacturing standards, probably tops without being Custom.
