If anyone is interested in the actual physics of nuclear EMP generation, it is actually kind of fascinating. There are some interesting papers available that explain it in detail, one of which is available at:
This explains the actual mechanism for how EMP is generated in a high altitude nuclear explosion. It is basically a charge separation cascade driven by prompt gamma rays from fission products from a 'fission' powered explosion. Fission bombs predominantly cause EMP, not fusion bombs. 3-Stage Fission-Fusion-Fission bombs will have enhanced prompt gamma ray production, and will thus produce an enhanced EMP. The 100 Megaton class Tsar Bomb, if tested in space with its full design yield of 100 Megatons and not 58 Megatons as it was tested would be absolutely devastating as far as EMP goes!
Now for mitigating EMP, there is an interesting document, unclassified and freely available for public use that describes in detail exactly what one has to do to EMP harden just about any habitable structure and the electronics it contains, including your house:
TM-5-690 "Grounding and Bonding in Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Facilities."
It is freely available to taxpayers at:
I recommend grabbing copies and learning about them. Some EMP shielding can be as easy as wrapping a walky-talky in a zip lock baggie and then putting it in a carefully aluminum foil lined cardboard box.
Inserting cardboard insulators in a US Government surplus ammo can can protect sensitive electronics from EMP, especially if the lid seams are covered with copper tape. Simple, cheap, and pretty effective!
