I am on a budget and cannot afford to build a shelter in my backyard. I have been reading about abandoned cold war era underground tunnels in my area [Inland Empire, Southern California]
If you're familiar with my area, Ontario California has abandoned tunnels from a High School underground for over a mile, originally intended for a Nuke shelter. In addition there are many other buildings with underground areas.
My thoughts are what if we had a "go bag" and a plan to get to the nearest underground basement or tunnel or safe shelter instead of building a backyard bunker? Obviously its more of a risk encountering other desperate families at the last second, but how would you handle air filtration in that scenario?
Is this idea even realistic? I'm more afraid of croaking from radiation poisoning than melting in the blast. Also Modern nukes would level all of SoCal to the AZ border so maybe this is a futile effort.
Low Budget Nuke survival, abandoned tunnels or other existing underground places
