I'm looking for cheap land to start a homestead from scratch and can't afford to travel or miss work until I've narrowed things down a LOT. So I need to research land (and states' politics) online! I will be building/modifying living spaces from unconventional items, a small amount at a time, in an area where it's legal to live creatively off-grid (from a building-code point of view).
(1) So I tried searching for undeveloped land online but don't have a clue what I'm doing. I ended up starting with some state/county websites that allow you to search property information by lot. It was very slow going learning to use what few I found...they have to be actual developed lots, and you have to click each one to find information. (Though it's useful from a valuation point of view, with acreage, square footage of home, number of garages/sheds, etc.) And it doesn't really tell me anything about whether the land in that area is woods, open, is good for crops, has a natural water source, etc. All I could really do was see what is in a satellite image.
So I really need to find sources online to compare land more efficiently, with more information, and not just house lots. I need access to lots of info from various states so I can compare and decide where I'd like to live and what I can afford to buy, so I can narrow down locations and set some budget goals.
(2) Also, is there anywhere online you can research the legal environment of various states regarding freedom to do what you want with your property...overzealous environmental regulations and building codes, legality to live/build without electricty/running water/solar not connected to the grid, CPA (Community Preservation Act, should be called "Destruction" act) and other partial implementations at the governement/planning level?
How to research undeveloped (and under-developed) land online?
