Inexpensive radio for use across 10 miles of rolling hills?

The title pretty much says it. I'm looking to be able to communicate with family about 10 miles away across rolling wooded hills and farmland without the use of a repeater.

I'm hoping there is some good option out there shy of getting the big-boy ham rig for each end. This isn't meant to be a regularly use piece of equipment, just want to be able to reach out for the proverbial daily "You okay?" Call if necessary.

Ideally I want something mobile. Handheld would be great, but I'm not holding out for that, something that could be run from the truck is almost as good.

Are there any good options out there, or am I asking too much?

(Before the hams all start ganging up, I'm not saying I'm unwilling to get licensed, just want something a bit simpler and less expensive.)
