Putting them above quail IMHO.
A friend of mine was going to do it, and I was going to steal ideas, get birds, and learn from it... but she didn't, and I'm tired of waiting.
Thing is, most modern ones are too small, and the ancient ones are too big.
So I'm trying to figure out how to build it right.
(I think I need 6 breeding pairs to make it worth it. Each need 2 "holes" to lay in. (Male gets stuck watching the first 2, female moves over and lays 2 more.)
I mainly want a stable breeding population requiring minimal inputs in exchange for occasional "free" meals.
So deciding how big to make it, and how to access it for both clean outs and harvesting eggs and squab.
The large ones had ladders inside.
I'm thinking something similar to these:

But designs I find online doesn't address access.
So 6 breeding psirs, probably need 9 to make up for losses.
And holes for young if I decide to "bank them" and do a large meal vs occasional small ones.
I can't make the entry holes big enough for these tasks as they need to be smaller to keep out tresspassers.
I've got metal for the roof, cedar boards to build it from, and galvanized pipe for the legs which should keep coons and such out.
Would just need to pick up some concrete. But the design eludes me.
