How do you stay warm?

Shrink wrap window film and heavy (4 layer, including a mylar blanket) homemade thermal curtains that sit flush with the frame to trap air near the window. One window has the plastic on the outside due to the animals tearing it. If folks make their own they can repurpose old blankets or whatever is handy to create the interior insulated layer.

The curtains make a HUGE difference, if I lift one to look outside in the morning I can feel ice cold air radiating off the window even with the plastic on it, they are equally effective to block sun/heat in the summer. I do use mylar/cardboard on a back prep storage room since those windows are never used anyway, but I frequently look out the rest of the house windows so no cardboard on those.

If it is really cold putting mylar blankets underneath the sheets and in between blankets (plus under dog bed covers) is very warm too, but it does make a crinkly noise. Putting mylar on the wall or even the ceiling behind stoves/heaters also helps to direct heat into a room instead of warming up the wall (but keep away from open flame else you will have a disaster on your hands).

I also need to make a couple of these. No sewing required, people can use old wrapping paper roles, material and glue if they don't sew.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
