marlin Model 336W 30-30

How is marlin doing for quality these days folks? I am helping out a retired shooter returning to the sport, getting his first gun in years. He was an avid 30-30 user in the day..

I notice the marlin 336 'W' seems to be one of the most affordable on the market( here at least) and coming in couple hundred dollars cheaper than Marlins other 336's. Also the shorter 20" barrel I am assuming that's not going to hurt 30-30 performance too much..

Thanks for any opinions on this gun.
