hatchet or knife for BOB/backpacking?

while an axe is ideal for chopping, cutting firewood, and most come with the ability to pound stakes, a knife is better for shaping, carving, and other tasks, while still being able to baton to cut larger pieces of wood.. you can also lever wood to break it without chopping at all

so given the weight/size constraints for a BOB or backpacking pack, can you go with a decent size outdoor knife, forego the hatchet, and make do with out one? or is it absolutely necessary?.. i have both, but if i had to take only one its a tough choice as they both have their pros and cons

what would you pick to outfit a pack with an emphasis on weight?
