Loading AR magazines from stripper clips

I just bought a can of 5.56 on stripper clips. I watched a couple videos on how to load magazines using them without special tools but I'm not getting anywhere. The cartridges just won't slide on the clips. I've ordered a maglula and a StripLula but I'd still like to pursue how to load them without special tools.

Anyone doing this successfully? Any thoughts about what might cause rounds not to slide in the clip?
