Civil war cache.

Interesting reading the accounts of confederate citizens during Sherman's total warfare pillage of the south.
Sherman ordered than all stores of food and livestock be confiscated from confederates, and all wildlife be shot. People said that there was scarcely even a bird to be seen, everything had been shot out, critter and foul.

Many men, women and children starved to death, it was no doubt a great atrocity, but a calculated one to expedite victory.

Crops that had been harvested ahead of Sherman's march, people cached in earthen ware Jars and buried in various places. Those that survived recount the man made famine and say the only thing that kept their families alive was the preemptive caching of food.

Families had to protect their food caches from both confederate and Yankee soldiers. When soldiers came to raid farms, the families begged the soldiers for food, which told them that there was nothing to take and made the soldiers move on.

Sherman ordered many barns and houses burned anyway, in case people had stored food secretly.
