Can goods with pop tops or pull tabs?

It's been about 3 years since I have been shopping for can goods- pee, mixed vegies, corn, etc. and am seeing some cans with pul tabs and some that you need a can opener to open.
Why do some cans use the pop tops and some don't? How reliable will the pop tops be for long term storage. Even seeing it with the same brand of item from the same companies.
