Last night I wanted to do a small solder job on a prototype I am building and couldn't find my flux. After looking online for alternatives I eventually came across using pine pitch in alcohol. I made some and it didn't work very well but then I tried heating the piece up then rubbing a chunk of dry pitch on it and then the solder flowed nearly as well as with store bought flux. Other than it being messy it was a good solution. The next time I am in town I will buy more flux but I figure this could be good information to have if a person is ever in a bind and needs to do a repair. I would assume I could also be done with salvaged lead from bullets or wheel weights if you really needed to.
