Making guns quiet.

does anyone put a lot of thought into the sound of their weapons?.. perhaps using suppressors and longer barrels or cartridges with faster powder to reduce how loud the sound is?.. are there any particular caliber choices for rifle, or pistol that you have made based on how loud they are?

i wouldnt mind having a core selection of firearms that were hearing safe without hearing protection and was wondering what those of you who have suppressors thing of various rifle configurations while using them.. is a 5.56 supersonic still hearing safe out of a suppressor? how much quieter is supersonic .300BO?.. is there a big difference in sound that you notice between a 12" and a 20" barrel?

and what about those who use suppressors on pistols? is there a preferred cartridge you use with a suppressor? and if so, why?

or is there simply not that much value in "hearing safe" weapons?
