we have 3 steel bins out in our pasture that are too small for the local farmers, even though they are 18ft diameter & of solid construction... I'm working on one this summer & hope to make it functional for pigs over the winter...
I cut a walk in door way, & framed that in welded angle iron, same for a pig sized door, on the SE side of the bin... also cut in a small window that looks towards the house, just to let a little extra light in... the bin already had a concrete floor, with a 10" square opening for auguring out the bottom... right now I'm putting in a 2nd floor for straw / bedding storage, & to hold the heat from the pigs, from going all the way to the top during the winter... so I concreted a treated 6X6 into the center & started putting rafters covering about 3/4 of the bin, so there is a space to throw up & down, straw bales...
there was power down there for a light & a couple old style dryers... so I'm going to run conduit to all 3 & start by putting minimum electricity in the one I'm working on right now... figuring 3 light bulbs on a switch, & 2 outlets...
anyone else make use of these old grain bins ??? seems to be a lot of space in there... I've seen pictures of people making man caves & putting bars & BBQ in them & such... I'm thinking one for winter shelter / pig nursery, then the 2nd one for other pasture animals... not sure what to do with the 3rd ???
