Continuing the tradition upheld by Funk, Unobtanium and more, I decided to do a direct comparison of six (6) of the various types of rounds I have kicking around for the AR. I have some others as well, and I think I will expand this comparison to include them, too -- M196 tracer, Black Tip, Remington, Winchester, and a bunch of other stuff. Funk proposed a test seeing how much POI shifted between different ammo types. As such, the rifle in this test was zeroed using Federal Lake City XM193. That zero was used for ALL ammo in this test.
The first thing I learned (and assumed going in) was that I really need to do this using my Lead Sled. My heartbeat is violent, and looking through the scope it has a 2-3 MOA effect. I'm no sniper, so controlling my breathing and heart rate are skills I definitely have not mastered. This naturally skews the results, so I'm going to repeat this test -- hopefully tomorrow -- using the Lead Sled. I think that will make all the difference in the world.
The rifle used was a 16" BCM BFH with KAC 2-Stage trigger. It's a heavy barrel, which I thought would be better for more consistent results. It's easily an MOA gun. I put about 20 rounds through before starting the test to warm it up some. I didn't want the first rounds going through a cold gun and the last ones through a hot one.
I shot five rounds each of M193, Wolf Gold 55gr .223, Hyperclean .223 60gr VMAX, M855 "Green Tip", PPU .223 69gr SMK (OTM), MK262 Mod1 77gr OTM -- in that order. Conveniently, one full 30-round mag.
The biggest surprise was how far RIGHT the last rounds -- the MK262 -- went. The rest of the lot was fairly close, with the M855 being loose, but I may have been the culprit there. The VMAX and the PPU are balls-out sniper-grade rounds. With some skill, a good shooter can make a ragged hole.
This test was done at a laser-measured 100-yards. Rifle zeroed using M193.
First Up: Federal XM193 (5.56 55gr FMJ)
Second is like unto it. Wolf GOLD .223 55gr FMJ
Third is HyperClean .223 60gr VMAX (crazy-awesome-accurate)
Fourth is Green Tip M855 (5.56 62gr Steel Core)
Fifth is Prvi Partisan (PPU) .223 69gr Sierra Matchking (OTM)
Sixth is CBC/Magtech MK262 Mod 1 (5.56 77gr OTM), which shifted 4-MOA dead RIGHT!
I plan on repeating this test tomorrow using the Lead Sled. I'm going to also re-zero using XM193 once again, using the sled.
AR Ammo Shootout! MK262, M193, M855, VMAX, Match, etc!
