Do multiple credit checks by one company count as multiple credit checks?

Title is a bit confusing I know.

What happened was that my wife was setting up internet for our house. She contacted Time Warner and because of questions that arose and drop calls by Time Warner they ended up doing 3 credit checks on her. Evidently the credit checks are standard when setting up with them.

When they said they had to do the 3rd one because she hadnt set up the account yet after the previous two she got upset and said that there was no reason they should have to do another one when they already had done it twice. The lady assured her that since it was the same company doing the checks within a short period of time that it would only count as one.

This sounds kind of fishy to me and I am wondering if anyone knows if there is any truth to it. Thanks for any info.
