I wasn't sure of the best place to put this, but I guess I'll start here. I just bought a house in a residential suburban area/neighborhood. It's close to town, but very wooded. I have just over an acre of land. Mostly wooded. I haven't even moved in yet and I was doing some work in the back yard with my father when out of nowhere a ~200 pound black bear casually strolls through. It was only 40-50 feet from us and did not even give us a glance. Not a care in the world. No way he didn't know we were there. I have two young children and my wife is freaked out now that the kids can never be outside without us. So, aside from the obvious stuff like not having food and garbage around, what can I do to keep bears away from the property/yard? I have bear spray and firearms, although there is no legal bear season here in CT. and I would definitely get grilled by the cops for squeezing off a shot even if it were self defense. Any and all input is appreciated.
