Tom Hanks Castaway Movie Question

I've watched cast away about a billion times, love the movie. But been thinking about some things. Being it a commercial airliner, not a passenger airliner, are the crew able to bring things aboard that wouldn't fly (pun intended) on a passenger aircraft? I was just thinking if I were in Chuck's position, flying all over, that I would have a survival bag packed and within reach, ready to be strapped on my back should things go south. In this bag would be the obvious survival essentials, a couple sturdy knives, firestarters, the whole get up, along with some signaling devices (flare gun, etc.), satellite radio/phone with solar charger (all waterproof, or in water proof bags).

Would a crew man on a commercial airliner be able to take those kinds of things on board, not in the cargo area, but I mean like right next to them.
