We have had positive experiences with the cheap AA/AAA battery-type LED lanterns available at Walmart (probably one of the only things I've bought there save for spray paint). They're cheap, I believe a bit over $5 each, they don't burn through batteries quickly (actually batteries lasted longer than I expected), have a few power settings, are light enough weight-wise to hang in a tent and are stable when placed on a table. We also remove the batteries either all of them or at least one when not in use to avoid "power drain" and keep the batteries either rubber-banded to the lantern or in a pill bottle beside it in a drawer and with our preps.
