Should the police or the military act based on politics?

Should a policeman or military man follow their oaths to protect and serve or to defend the constitution or not, depending on the politics of the people they're asked to protect and serve?

As a question of morality, ethics, and honor, is the honorable thing to say, "I won't protect that person because his politics are different from mine," or is it the honorable thing to say, "I disagree with the politics of that man but I will stand by my oath and serve him like I would my own brother. But away from the job, I disagree with him strongly?"
