When buying prepping items, when do you go top of the line....

I base a lot of my decisions on likely frequency of use of a particular item. For instance, I bought a fairly inexpensive hand drill to use in the event that there is no electricity to power/charge an electric drill, going with an inexpensive one because I do very little drilling to begin with. Same with some of my other hand tools. I don't buy particularly expensive rifle optics, as my eyes are crap enough that I'm not even going to recognize a possible target (whatever that may be) at long distances.

It's rare that I buy top-dollar items in any category, but I do agree that water filtration in particular calls for quality and thus a bit more money. Likewise, I feel that a working knife ought to be high quality. I no longer buy cheap steel-cased ammo and very rarely buy reloads except when that's the only option, in which case it's probably not cheap.
