Soil smells like burnt oil??

Hey guys...

In the process of digging my storm shelter.. I'm down ~7' when I hit some wet gray clay that smells like burnt motor oil.

What am I digging into?? I cant find any info other then oil contamination... I don't see any oil... clay is just really moist and stinks like an engine that's burning oil.

The area where I am used to be a coal mine. Most of the soil is fill... Ive been digging through several feet of clean brown soil but then I started smelling this oil smell. My next shovel deep found really wet clay with that smell.

Ideas on what I could be running into??
