Your version isn't far from the facts. One that you left out is that in the first year they tried to run a commune. Failed and many died. So they switched to a "capitalist" system, and prospered. It was after
that that the famous feast was held.
That they were underprepped is putting it mildly. Most of the Pilgrims were town people; no idea how to farm. An object lesson for us all.
