You mention trying both a 6- and a 10- meter antenna, but don't say which band you are trying to work, or whether on simplex, or via a repeater system...
While wide-band discone antennas show an acceptable VSWR over a wide range of frequencies, they provide only unity gain and their radiation pattern is spherical, rather than having the lobes down on the horizon.
Wide-band loops and folded dipoles are also less efficient radiators than a dipole cut to frequency.
A simple to build multi-band antenna for HF which doesn't require a transmatch or tuner, is a "fan dipole" which combines 3-4 halfwave wire dipoles, each cut to frequency for a different band, all fed from a single feedpoint, using a military Budwig type center conductor and fed with coax with a balun, or ladder line.
