Can anyone recommend a decent washing machine?

I have been out of the business for a few years, but last I knew the Cabrio and its sister the Maytag Bravo were based on the Fisher & Paykel design under license.

The problem with the "high efficiency" top load designs was that they simply did not use enough water to properly clean clothes and remove all the soap residue.

The GE Hydrowave series were decent top loaders, more so when they got a few bugs worked out. Many of the bad reviews on them were from the early models. Tub seals and mode shifter solenoids are the two common problems with them and they are both a job to change. GE parts are expensive. Good suspension system. Models still available with a load size/water level knob.

Maytag and Amana were bought out by Whirlpool and the Maytag laundry factories were closed. The direct drive Whirlpool washers were solid and simple to repair. The new design washer had a lot of complaints on wash and rinse performance, no load size knob and the lid locking.

Frigidaire top loaders are junk and have been for many years. They are disposable machines for the most part.

The Speed Queen is the one of only current production "normal" top load washers that I feel confident suggesting to friends and family. Built like tanks, easy to repair, and the best warranty in the business. With routine maintenance, it should last 20 years.

The problem with Kenmore is that everything is contract manufactured. Without partially disassembling that washer, I couldn't tell you who actually manufactured it. Years ago Kenmore was almost exclusively Whirlpool laundry products. Not so today. Whoever can make it with the features they want and at the price point is who gets the contract.

Front loaders are great in some ways and a pain in others. They require more upkeep and need a solid floor under them. They have a ton of capacity but the wash cycles are longer. If you hang dry your clothes, adjustable spin speed is a must or you will get very familiar with your iron.

If you are willing to purchase used or refurbished, look for "Newton" platform Maytags. They are the two belt model, 25.5 inch wide. The "Herrin" platform Maytags were rebadged Norge/Magic Chef machines. Whirlpool "direct drive" machines are good but be sure it's a two speed motor with a true delicates cycle as the Whirlpools aggressive agitation in regular speed will beat delicate clothes up pretty bad.
