If you want to stash a few thousand dollars in cash for a rainy day, that's probably a great idea. When you're talking about stashing tens of thousands of dollars, you're going to take a huge hit due to inflation over the years. It just makes sense to put it into something that historically has been an inflation hedge.
If your eccentric uncle dies and leaves you a box, would you rather find $10k in 1980 $20 bills, or gold coins that he bought for $10k in 1980?
