Aerial Recon: Quadcopter or RC plane?

Everyone seems to think that Quadcopters (or hexa- or however many) are the bee’s knees right now, especially for aerial photography, but do they make better aerial recon platforms than RC planes? Has anyone looked into this?

Quadcopters might make a more stable platform and be easier to hold over a target or event of interest, but logic seems to suggest to me that a similarly sized RC plane should be able to spend much more time aloft/loitering because of the Bernoulli Principal.

Does one trump the other if you are deploying it from your get-home bag/vehicle vs on an extended patrol/supply run vs from at your retreat?

Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated.

Oh, and if anyone has a link to an existing thread that I missed, that would be great too.
