California fires

I can see 3 different major fires from atop a nearby hill.

The Thomas fire is the biggest - 45,000 acres, hundreds of homes, people dead and no containment yet. It has burned all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was burning so fast that residents had no time at all to grab things. Some were driving out empty handed in pajamas. Might have started when someone started a "campfire" in gale force winds.

The Rye fire is about 6000 acres and is 7 miles west of me. They shut down the hospital where my wife works for a day and evacuated several smaller communities. Interstate 5 and highway 126 closed.

The Creek fire is 40 miles east, hundreds of evacuations and the 210 freeway is closed.

Looking south I can see another fire, the Skirball fire. It isn't very big but they evacuated parts of the community of Bel Aire. They've closed the 405 freeway. This is a neighborhood where a million dollars wouldn't buy the lot to build a house on.

This is all driven by wind. We had winds of 30 gusting to 50 a couple days ago. They are still 20 gusting to 35. No word yet but I suspect arson in most of them.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
