I not only always hire a local guide but also local porter (burden carrier)
The main reason is due to safety reason because nobody know the up to date condition (weather pattern, hazardous spot, animals behaviours, etc) more then local guide, and also to help stimulate local economy. Furthermore where I come the guide also taken care the necessary paper works, and organizing logistic support.

In most part of the world, mountain guide usually has certified credential issued by mountaineering guide association or similar organization. You should check their credentials before hiring.
