I shot a robot today!

Seriously, several times.

Wasn't sure where to put this, as we don't have a dedicated firearms training forum as far as I know (if there's a better place Mods, please move).

So, I took a training class this morning on drawing from concealment. Great facility and staff, and if you're going to carry I suggest taking something of the sort as regularly as you can.

Couple things that made this class kind of special. First, we practiced shooting from retention. Standing arms length from the target and 'shooting from the hip.' There's a method to it, and it's a good thing to practice as it's a very realistic situation. Plus, it's not practiced much I think.

Second, after all the skills we worked on, we got to shoot "Mannequin Mike."
Basically this shooting torso (3D person from the legs up, complete with head, arms, etc...) that is attached to a heavy duty motorized chassis. Like a really big RC car.
It moves in all directions, can circle around, run away from you, and run right at you. If you have to shoot him, he actually falls down once enough hits are registered. Miss, or hit him outside COM, and he keeps coming.

It's actually kind of stressful. So there's when do I shoot/not shoot, then if you have to, there's shooting a moving target while you're moving, and talking to it: "Stop!" "Drop the gun!" Whatever. Helps inform the potential assailant of your intentions, it's keeps you breathing (key), and it creates 'witness record.'
One of my buddies in the class with me is LE, and he has never done anything like this either. It's the most realistic training I've ever had, and really drove home the OODA loop limitations. There are a lot of things going n when you're in a situation where you have to draw your pistol from concealment, address the threat, worry about backstop/civilians, then focus on the front sight and get enough rounds on target to stop the threat... all while getting off the X and not getting killed yourself.

We had our pulses up, and it was just training... it was also about the most fun I've had firearms wise in a very long time.

All this to say, if you're going to carry, remember to train. And if you're going to train, find someplace that provides great skills improvement, and a lot of fun! There's so much more than punching holes in paper down a lane!
