Justified War

Is war justified? In what conditions? We are living in an era where the weapons are so powerful that any conflict can quickly become a small or large genocide. Are we ready as Christians to destroy huge parts of humanity in case large nations (like China, or Iran) want to destroy us? What are our guiding lines or even limits on this decision?

Do we have justification in the Bible as Christians for such a massive war? Is it the same as self-defense? Are we justified to preemptive attack?

These are questions that should be discussed at length so that some form of clarity comes from this. With the idea in mind that "a Sanhedrin that puts a man to death once in seven years is called a murderous one" and that all life is important in the eyes of God what can we do in war in this day and age?
