matching inverter size to load question

Was messing around in the garage last weekend and got to thinking,just out of curiosity.I have 3 diffferent types and sizes.

I hope I word this right,so to keep it simple,assume they are exactly the same,but output either 500-750-and 1000 watts.

If I need to power 250w..will the larger ones "waste' more power from the battery than the smaller one?

I'm guessing a gas genny would waste more gas running a larger one than a smaller one for the same load..but would it matter since the invertor is electronic vs.mechanical?
