How does one "break-in" a cast iron stove

I once had a brand new Taiwan copy of a Jodal, looks like the one in the pic. I took it completely apart and put it back together with furnace cement. I let it dry for a few days then took it outside and built about 5 small fires to burn off the stinking oil and anneal the cast iron/steel. It was good stove, 100% air tight - you could easily choke the fire completely out, it never cracked, cooked a lot meals on the flat top.

Doesn't hold enough wood for -20 degree in a poorly insulated house - someone needs to get up and put in more wood. Wind up alarm clock works when the power is out. Door is small so split wood burns fast. Not brick lined - no coal.

My current stove (over 20 years in use) has a big door, air tight, flat topped, brick lined - have burnt lump hard coal, $200 for the winter cheapest heat ever but stinks inside and out.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
