A drainage ditch how deep and how wide?

What's your likely worst case? What kind of 'drainage ditch' can a Hummvee cross? I can't find numbers, but it's unlikely to be more than a four foot vertical.

If you want to be convincing you will need to go down to the water table, or something close to it. Do you want to live surrounded by stagnant water, or will there actually be a flow in the ditch?

Just don't go putting a palisade on top of the spoil bank...

Your entry points will be the important features.

You could be more subtle about it. Something like a ha-ha (google it) might achieve your objective without being obvious to passers by from the local government planning office. I would guess you need the vertical on the outside, rather than the inside, as happens in landscaped gardens.You obviously want to keep deer and other pests off your property.
