I like WhatsApp.

It's free, can work over wifi, and it's encrypted. It's so encrypted that ISIS uses it. I also sometimes use it to chat with people overseas, too, for work. It works on phones, tablets and computers. It's been around awhile so it's established.

You can also make phone calls with it, although I haven't tried it.

Skype works too, but it's owned by Microsoft and they're probably spying on us with it. I have to use Skype with a guy I work with in Australia because he prefers it. But it works well.
