Theoretical- Transmit in between bands?

Hey, folks. brand new unlicensed wannabe ham here.

A few months ago I saw a youtube video in which a Baofeng owner teaches users how to get a shred of privacy by setting up two radios. Radio 1 receives on A and transmits on B. Radio 2 receives on B and transmits on A. This way even if someone gets on one of your channels, they can only hear half the conversation. Sure, I guess they can find both and enable a dual watch function to hear the whole thing, but the odds of that happening seem very slim.

I was thinking of theoretically taking this a step further. Most people who accidentally stumble across your channels are probably going to be using bubble pack radios- FRS most likely but maybe even MURS or GMRS. (I'm not talking about hams here since there's nothing a Baofeng can do to stop them anyway.)

So what if you set your radios to transmit in between bands? For example, Chan 1 on FRS is 467.5625 and Chan 2 is 467.5875. So how about programming a "Private" channel somewhere in between, say 467.5750? Or why not take it even further and transmit somewhere virtually NO ONE would be snooping; say, in between WX bands? Couple this with the factory 1W "Low" power setting and a few of the smallest, stubbiest antennas you can find, keep the transmissions as brief as possible, use code words, and it seems like about as much privacy as one could hope for without encryption.

What say you?

DISCLAIMER: Yes, I know some of this is FCC prohibited as of right now. This theoretical is only for TEOTWAWKI preparation purposes and I do not advocate anyone break the law.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
