I was born and raised in the DFW area. For the most part was very conservative. Even thru the original southern democrat mindset in the 60's. Times change and the ultra liberal has a stronghold on the metroplex. Crime rates up along with poverty, time to leave. Way past that now. Most of the older established areas are minority or illegals. So I left and better for it.
Over the years I have removed myself from debt and overhead. Hence the container build out in the middle of nowhere. Except for oak trees. They are everywhere. I do occasional work on the side now when a friend calls me. Run data cable at some grocery stores during remodels. Pays very well. But on their schedule when duty calls.
This week I was called out to Louisiana, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Lake Charles. Just a 5 day stint. Working nights with less than intelligent laborers. The specialized ones, using that word loosely, did not speak english, or did on a very limited scale. The day laborers or temps were mostly locals that saw an advantage to working legitimately, but no real qualifications. Basically just grunts making $8.25 and hour for just standing there.
Anyway I got a taste of the 99% of people that are out there. These are the ones that would need to rely on outside intervention if SHTF or EMP, foreign occupation. Anything that could disrupt their current limited existence.
Before Katrina I was not that worked up about the "others" in a shtf scenario. The others are anyone that have not thought or planned past the given day. These people can also include the thugs, drifters, gangs, or people that have been dependent on government assistance most if not all of their lives. Especially anyone without any real skill set or education. Not always their fault, but still have to be dealt with in a real world disaster.
Prior to Katrina I had no idea of the potential horrific outcome from a massive influx of "refugee" types in large numbers. The local news covered how these types suffered from pure lack of consideration, appreciation and respect for other peoples property. I as skeptical at first until dealing with it firsthand.
So if something happens on a national or global scale that affects the majority of your population, you will run into these people on a massive scale. I would say the urban community that has become too reliant on their normal lifestyle.
I think this will be a big concern for those who have made some type of preparations for a worst case scenario. So during your personal travels, why types have you encountered that may be faced in a real life fustercluck? Short term or long term, they would present a very big obstacle. A fight or flight situation. But the numbers could be staggering.
Without too many details about yourself, post your personal experiences and specifically where they took place. This thread could get fairly large with a bunch of excellent information to help others out traveling into unfamiliar territory on the run to their BOL.
What types of people do you meet?
