Ethanol Info

HOWEVER, ethanol can be an excellent fuel in high performance applications. It has very high octane, high latent heat of vaporization, plus excellent anti-knock properties as an additive to normal gasoline. The use of 10% ethanol in gas, does prevent the use of other, far more toxic octane boosters and oxygenates, such as MTBE, Xylene, Benzene and Toluene.

So, while US ethanol as a fuel is largely impractical, it's not 100% the horror so commonly presented. Consider it an effective performance additive. We like to rail against ethanol fuels in our lawn mowers and older equipment. But we also like our turbocharged vehicles, and ethanol containing fuels work really well for this.

An 87 octane, 10% ethanol blend will make more HP, due to it's excellent anti knock properties under boost, than 89 octane non ethanol containing fuel in high boost engines, such as Ford Ecoboost and GM's turbocharged engines.
