Life Straws vs heavy metals/chemicals

Someone asked me if water purification tablets would make water safe to drink if there was heavy metal/chemicals in the water. As far as I know, it won't. But it got me to thinking about Life Straws and other water purification equipment.

My question is, will a Life Straw or other water purification brands stop such things so you could drink the water?
