Over-population, deforestation, desertification, wildlife diversity loss, an over reliance on tech, and much more, all sired by an omnipresent idea that population and economy have to always be growing, is making me nervous. We can't afford to keep on like this. I hope technology and greater awareness can help stop humanity from veering over the edge, but I feel like it is now, more than any other period in human history, an ideal time to prepare for society to go awry. So many issues have swept up my classmates that I worry they lose sight and take for granted the very basics.
As an East Coast boy, I'm not exactly the granola-crunchy forest type. I think I drank from a stream once as a kid... but overall I'm just starting to read up on survival skills. I guess a good place to start is by creating a bug-out bag, so I'll definitely read up and ask you guys about that. I have a shotgun, lots of water containers, first aid, and a knife, so I'll work from there. When I reach 21 I'll eventually get a carry revolver (luckily no grizzlies to worry about out here).
I know that the Northeast is probably one of the worst places to be in a crisis, given how densely populated it is (safe areas could be rural PA, upstate NY, Northern New England). However, I feel a duty to try and help whichever community I end up living near. I might run at first, but I want to try my best to come back and help others in need. It goes against the mantra of bugging out to the woods... so I guess I'll have to read up on urban/suburban survival and cold-climate growing as well.
I'm not sure where I'll end up in a few years, but if you have any tips on the following places where I might end up that'd be great:
- Eastern PA
- South-eastern MA
- North-eastern MA
- Portland (Maine) Metro area
- Portsmouth (NH) Metro area
Thanks for reading.
