Three Roads to the Alamo review

Just finished this nearly 800 page text (including chapter notes) by William C. Davis that sheds light on the lives of Bowie, Crockett, and Travis prior to their shared fates at the Alamo. It is not another book about the siege, but rather an exhaustive pre-history of the three men outlining their personal and professional failures that ultimately led them to San Antonio. It is a fascinating read, and one that presented some interesting bits of information:

- Bowie was incapacitated by typhoid by the time the Alamo was overrun, and had no impact in the fighting.

- Sam Houston is portrayed as something of a villain, holding out support for political reasons, support that would have assuredly aided the Alamo defenders.

- Though Bowie and Travis fell in spots that history has remembered, Crockett's demise was never accurately pinpointed. He is said to have died anywhere and everywhere.

- Bowie's specific legend has overwhelmed reality ... he was a lifelong scam artist re: land claim manipulation.

Is there any connection to the theme and purpose of this website and forum? I think so ... the book provides clearly defined portraits of each man, their strengths and failings, and personifies their collective willing to fight and survive in the face of staggering odds. Their individual goals are explained as well, but the bottom line is these men embodied many of the attributes that we today strive for as patriots, preppers, and human beings.

Outstanding book.
