Hiking socks

So I've found that to wear heavier winter socks effectively, I end up buying slightly larger volume boots. Unfortunately, this has the effect of making them fit, er, not so well during warmer weather. This problem is especially true of my duty boots which see year-round use but also with hiking boots and such since during moderate winter weather they are ofter my go-to footwear.

I have some various thickness merino and merino blend socks from lightweight "everyday" merino Smartwool socks to heavy knit winter socks... But Haven't found too much in between. What are some good recommendations for thicker, cushioned summer boot socks? People say merino is great year round, but it does get warm with a cushioned knit.
