High Rise Fire

Even if you live in a detached ranch house, you're vulnerable to fire.

OTOH, I live on the 4th floor of a 5-story. My options for escape are a fire escape to the street from my front bedroom window, the front door and hallway stairs at the other end of the apartment down to either the street in front or the air shaft in back and up into a window in the building next door, anyone else's window onto the front or back fire escapes, the stairs up to the roof from which one can cross to the roof of the next building with fire escapes on either side, or a rope out the kitchen window into the air shaft with stairs to the street level of the building next door on the opposite side.

The chances of all those exits being blocked at the point the smoke alarms go off is pretty low. The danger is nothing comparable to that of a 20-some story high rise with only one sprinklered stairway exit, which is what they apparently had in the building in that news story.
