Tried Planting in 4 gallon buckets, Watering with Aquarium Water

So I tried something new this year, downsized my garden to some buckets. layered empty water bottles on their side on the bottom, after making many razor cuts in them, to allow water, but not soil to enter. cut a 30" PVC pipe, the bottom having an angle, placed in a corner, then Miracle Grow potting mix on top of the bottles, the bottles leave a void space for water, which would be introduced via the pvc pipe. Also, had to drill a couple of drainage holes at about the same height as the top of the bottles, to allow the soil to "breathe".

These designs have been working GREAT! Better than I thought they would. There are a few videos with some similarities, but I tweaked it to my liking, and wow, my plants are doing great.

I also started watering them with old/used fish water from my daughters aquarium recently, and what a difference that makes.

I also put a 1.75L liquor bottle with the bottom cut off, turned upside down into the top of the PVC pipe (the long neck goes a few inches in, which helps keep it there, unlike a short neck of a 2L soda bottle), to assist in catching rain, and making it easier to pour water into the pipe, I also keep the little plastic pourer on the end, which I think helps keep bugs out and mosquitos from going down and laying eggs in the water.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
